Club aluminum…

It shouldn’t surprise me as much as it does, but I’m still amazed every time I see something on EBay that I have sitting on my shelves. This time it’s a basic cooking pot. I’ve had mine for years — since the days when avocado green and harvest gold were big colors — which means the mid-seventies. It was a wedding present of sorts — the mother of my best friend was appalled to find out I was getting married and didn’t have any “proper” pots. I wasn’t too worried about it. We had some things and I did have what I thought was most important, which was a cast iron frying pan I inherited from my great aunt. But it was perfectly true that I didn’t have regular saucepans. So she bought us an avocado green Club aluminum pot.
It’s been wonderful — I’ve used it all these years and it still works perfectly. I kept that pot (and, of course, the frying pan) in the divorce and in the subsequent combinings and divisions of property that have happened over the years. It’s a good size for two people and perfect for one.
If I’d known then how long I’d be using it, I’d have bought others to go with it. Seems the company went out of business a few years ago. Maybe during those years when people were insisting that aluminum cookware would cause some kind of medical problem. Maybe for some other reason. In any event, those pots are now appearing on EBay. So if I wanted to spend more money than seems reasonable, I could get more — perhaps even in that avocado green. But I guess I’ll just stick with the pot I have. It’s probably good for another 30 years.
