Spray-ons…

I’m not really a shopper, but I do like to thumb through ads and see some of the products I’d never have imagined.  The Sunday ads are usually a good source of entertainment if not amazement.  Today there was spray-on salad dressing.  I see what they’re trying to get at — the idea is that if you only spray on some dressing you’ll have more control over the portions and perhaps reduce your calorie intake in the process.  The advertised product mentioned in big print exactly how many calories “per spray.”

There are a couple of things about this that worry me, though.  What are we putting in the dressing to make it more “sprayable”?  Some chemical or emulsifier?  I’ve never tried to put something basic like oil and vinegar in a spray bottle but I’m not sure it would be very effective.  And do you spray your whole salad at once, or just part of it, and add more spray later.  Not to mention what happens if the spray doesn’t really land on the lettuce leaves but on the table or near your salad bowl instead of in it.  I can see some definite issues there.

I’ll be interested to see if this becomes a standard product.  Not one I’m likely to buy because I don’t buy salad dressing in the first place.  It was one of those things that I cut out years ago and I’ve never missed it.  But, judging by the rows of options in the grocery store, there’s a substantial market for dressings of all kinds.
