Miracles do happen…

This isn’t really in the proper category of miracles, but it’s definitely an unusual and unexpected event. The carpet store near my apartment has finally really gone out of business – after at least three years of “absolutely final, everything on sale” announcements and signs on the windows.
I never went in this establishment. Mostly because I don’t need a carpet. But even if I did, I have some bias against stores that seem to be perpetually in clearance mode. Either they’re being really indecisive about the need to close their business (a decision I think one would make well before making floor-to-ceiling signs) or they’re just trying to manipulate passers-by into thinking good deals can be had inside.
I’ve walked by this particular place dozens of times a week for three or four years and I think I would have noticed if it had really gone out of business and then been taken over by some new management which, coincidentally, just happened to need to go out of business as well. So I was fully prepared to have those signs stay in place forever.
Imagine my surprise today when I happened to look up as I was passing their corner. The windows were cleared of signs and no contents were to be seen on the inside.
My desk was behind this column.
